We are over the moon to be designing an energy efficient barn conversion for a new client in Northamptonshire.
Our clients have a site on a working farm with a large, draughty barn. They would like to turn it into an energy-efficient, family home, with modern, clean lines, where everything has its place, and where there is lots of natural light and oodles of space. A vital element of the brief is to create plenty of space – no boxy rooms here.
Good Building Design
Good building design comes from a careful analysis of the site at the concept design stage. This site has views across a valley looking to the North West. Therefore, the primary rooms will be orientated in this direction to benefit from the view and some incredible sunsets. You can see a sketch of the existing site and its context above to give you a feel for the potential.
It is inspiring that our clients are interested in energy efficiency, which is a core feature of the buildings we want to design. We start most conversations with clients with sustainability in mind. We have been exploring the opportunities of designing to Passivhaus standards on this project to generate energy to feedback into the grid. Opportunities like this are what get us excited and out of bed in the morning.
If you are new to Passivhaus, it’s worthwhile looking at the different levels of Passivhaus for new builds, but also the EnerPHit standard that applies to the retrofitting and refurbishment of existing buildings. You can find out more at the Passivhaus Trust’s website here.
Can we help you too?
We are looking forward to helping our clients realise the potential of a great site and an exciting brief. Please get in touch with us if you are considering something similar. We are based in Bedford and work with clients from Oxfordshire to Cambridgeshire and everything in between.
You can find out more about our architectural services here. We are lucky to be involved in several residential design projects where our clients want to go above the minimum requirements for energy efficiency. This includes everything from the refurbishment of a semi-detached family home to a block of 30 apartments.
